Purpose

    MKB sold loans worth HUF 130 billion and transferred nonperforming loans with face value of HUF 214 billion to an asset management vehicle. The cleaned-up bank was sold to a consortium of private buyers in 2016 for HUF 37 billion, roughly one third of its book value at the end of 2015
  • Notable Features
    First bank to be resolved using BRRD in Hungary; BayernLB recapitalized MKB by writing off EUR 270 million in outstanding loans at the time of MKB’s sale to the Hungarian state in Sept. 2014; resolution was precautionary, as it was based on projected losses; no bail-in was applied to other creditors in the resolution; deputy central bank governor Ádám Balog resigned from his position to lead MKB as CEO and chairman and later took a 10% stake in the bank
